Key Components of the Class
Breath (Ujjayi Pranayama): One of the core principles of Ashtanga yoga is the use of a specific breathing technique called Ujjayi pranayama. This deep, rhythmic breathing helps create internal heat and maintain focus during the practice. In this class, you will learn how to properly execute Ujjayi breath and integrate it seamlessly with your movements.
Postures (Asanas): The primary series consists of a set sequence of postures, each designed to build on the previous one, creating a flow that enhances strength and flexibility. Our instructors will break down each posture, providing detailed instructions and modifications to suit all levels of ability. You will gain an understanding of key postures such as Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar), standing poses, seated poses, and finishing postures.
Drishti (Gaze): Drishti refers to the focused gaze used in each posture. It helps to cultivate concentration and awareness. During the class, you will learn how to direct your gaze in various postures to enhance your practice and deepen your meditation.
Vinyasa (Flow): The term 'Vinyasa' refers to the linking of breath with movement. Ashtanga yoga emphasizes a smooth and continuous flow between postures. In this class, you will practice transitioning from one posture to the next, maintaining the flow and rhythm of the sequence.
Bandhas (Energy Locks): Bandhas are internal energy locks that help to control and direct the flow of energy within the body. You will be introduced to the three main bandhas – Mula Bandha (root lock), Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock), and Jalandhara Bandha (throat lock) – and learn how to engage them during your practice.
