Since 2002, Kelly and Evan Harris have traveled far and wide to practice under today’s best yoga instructors. This includes five months with Sharath Jois at KPJAYI in Mysore, India, as well as ten years of study with their primary teacher, Matthew Sweeney (yogatemple.com). In addition to teaching and training internationally, Kelly and Evan operate Tapas Yoga Shala in Rock Island, IL. Technically skilled and spiritually driven, their truly deep and modern instruction is focused on accessing the contemplative nature of yoga through the physical practice.
10 am The Moon Series
The Moon Series is a flowing vinyasa practice authored by Matthew Sweeney, author of Ashtanga Yoga: As It Is. The Moon Series emphasizes the hips, spine, and front body and connects practitioners to the softer elements of practice: the ida nadi, the parasympathetic nervous system, and the faculties of intuition and self-care. This sequence is also excellent for learning back-bending shapes and actions, for deeply releasing the hips, and for seeing the practice is new ways. All levels welcome.
1 pm Jump, Float, Fly
In this class, we will weave together basic elements of strength in yoga practice and build toward advanced potential: how to scoop out the belly, lock the arms, roll the hips. Progressing slowly from forward bends, through plank, and on toward jump throughs, jump backs, arm balances and handstand lifts, you will be amazed at how accessible these postures can be with the right prep. Expect equal parts challenge and fun in a supportive environment. All levels welcome.
3 pm Gateway Postures
In Ashtanga yoga, certain postures loom large. They mark the “gateway” through to new levels of understanding, integration, and depth: Marichyasana D, Kurmasana, Urdhva Dhanurasana, and Kapotasana to name a few. In this workshop, we will deconstruct the intention, anatomy, and elements of these and other Gateway Postures. Feeling “stuck” in a posture? Bring your own challenges to workshop. Learn the best ways to address pain, improve strength, and gain mobility. All levels welcome.
